On December 13th, a fleet of 2,800 drones with RGB lights twinkled like stars above Dubaï’s 150-meter Frame, providing a breathtaking vision for many. The players down at the ground were directing the Tetris action, frantically tapping away at their buttons, while the machines provided instant feedback.



Fehmi Atalar was in the middle of it when his Peruvian opponent, Leo Solórzano, made the initial move in the last round. But Atalar was having none of it and wouldn’t let him get away with it. Solórzano was well on his way to a tidy score of 57,164 points in the five minutes he had to play, due primarily to 1,400 drones stitching out his Tetris block by block, line by line.

As soon as Atalar got into his stride, the points started flooding in. The drones flew across the sky, stacking his Tetris blocks, an L-shape here and a square there, against the brightly lit Dubai skyline. He ended with a total of 168,566, and then formally named the first Red Bull Tetris World Champion.


This contest has been going on for months, with just standard mobile phone games, 7 million in all, being played in 60 nations. The winners from each country then faced off in a two-day knockout competition in Dubai. Red Bull had gotten in on the act and started making things a little more interesting with some added twists, such as 3 minute rounds when gravity would shift on you and speed was increased, as well as power-ups to assist you get ahead. It was a close competition, but Atalar and Solórzano emerged as the top seeds for the final round.

After winning his pre-final, Atalar was given the option of choosing when he wanted to play. He went second, allowing Solórzano to go first with the target. All of his hard work over the past five years had paid off handsomely, and the 19-year-old was ecstatic. “That was the best part of my five years of playing Tetris,” he screamed, trying to put into words how amazing it felt.

The people that put everything together engaged Lumasky to aid them with the drone side of things. They are aerial show gurus, and they ensured that all 4,000 or so drones used were perfectly in tune with everything the players were doing. Of course, a few additional were brought out for the opening performance, but El Waili and the Firdaus Orchestra’s music remained in the air, a deep pulsating beat placed on top of the traditional Tetris theme.
