Charlotte Dobre chatted about being an actress, comedian, influencer and content creator in the digital age.
What inspires you each day as an artist, content creator and influencer?
I create content because, at the end of the day, I want to help my viewers navigate their problems: relationship problems, friend problems, family problems and maybe try to see the humor in crappy situations, too.
Ironically, I’ve also overcome many of my own struggles as a result of hearing their stories.
What inspires you each day as an actress and comedian?
At the end of the day, what drives me is this incessant need to entertain and make people laugh.
I honestly wish it wasn’t such a big part of my personality, because putting yourself out there to live a life of rejection and ridicule isn’t the easiest path.
Also, performing, acting, writing, telling jokes — it makes me so happy. I really feel like it’s my purpose, and I’ve always felt that way.
How does it feel to be a part of the digital age?
Surreal. If you had asked me growing up if I’d like to be a YouTuber, I’d laugh in your face and say, “What’s that?”
It’s pretty amazing to be a part of an industry that’s a true meritocracy, you get back what you put in, and you determine your own success.
I’ve always believed that you can create your own future if you’re stubborn and willing to put in the work, and digital content creation has enabled me to do so.
What do your plans for the future include?
I’ve been incorporating more writing and acting into my content, and I want to do more of that. I’m also really looking forward to starting a family.
How do you use technology in your daily routine?
I study content and algorithms daily. When I’m consuming content, I always try to dissect what about that content made it go viral and how I can apply that to my own content.
Algorithms are constantly changing, and content has to change with them.
What is your advice for young and emerging comedians, actors, and content creators?
There is no such thing as an overnight success. Any time you see someone who has succeeded, there are many years of struggle and rejection behind them. And rejection still happens even when you become successful.
My point is, rejection is not failure; it’s just redirection. The only difference between someone who succeeded and someone who didn’t is that the person who succeeded didn’t give up when they experienced rejection. They kept going. And so should you.
Were there any moments in your career that have helped define you?
COVID was a huge wake-up call for me. It was devastating in so many ways, but it forced me to think outside the box and stop making excuses.
If it weren’t for the pandemic, I never would have hunkered down and prioritized content creation on my own channel, and I wouldn’t be where I am today.
What does the word success mean to you? (My favorite question)
Waking up every day and getting to do what you love (and get paid for it).
