Apple continues to push the limit with the AirPods 4, fine-tuning the open-ear design and adding active noise cancellation, a tough ask given the lack of those bothersome silicone tips. Users report that the buds effectively reduce low rumbles and background chatter without shutting up the ear canal. However, when compared to Bose’s latest QuietComfort Earbuds, priced at $129 (was $179), the differences are quite noticeable in real-world use.

Noise cancellation is the main selling point of these Bose buds, and testing reveals that they block out a lot more ambient sound across the board. It’s due to their ingenious use of silicone tips to form a suitable seal, along with some high-tech mics. As a result, jet engines fade into the distance, office banter disappears, and street traffic loses its edge. AirPods 4 perform admirably for an open design; they withstand constant droning well, but higher pitched noises such as voices or wind tend to get through a little easier.

AirPods 4 rely solely on their shape, which is good for most individuals, but they can move around somewhat, affecting overall performance. Both have good call quality, but Bose outperforms in noisy environments because it does a better job of eliminating background disturbances.
