Google’s Selfie-Powered Virtual Clothes Try-On Just Got a Major Upgrade, Thanks to Nano Banana

Shopping for clothes online can be a bit of a gamble, but Google has recently updated its virtual try-on tool to make it simpler and more realistic than ever before. When shopping in the United States, you can simply upload a selfie and Nano Banana takes care of the rest, as there’s no longer a need for a full-body shot.

The system then uses that to build a digital version of you, and you can try on just about any outfit that pops up on Google Shopping. Behind the scenes is something called Nano Banana, which is the name Google gave to a new tool called the Gemini 2.5 Flash image model. Users can start by going to a specific page on Google Shopping, taking a selfie, and selecting their typical clothing size. It then suddenly generates a plethora of full-body images of you, all captured in bright, clear light.

You can then choose the one that looks best and make it your default so that the next time you try it on, it will be even faster. Once that’s done, surfing gets simple: choose anything you like the look of, touch the try on button, and watch it appear on your digital self. You can try on items from a variety of sources, including millions of listings from numerous companies that span everything from tops to dresses for both men and women. The goal is to be as realistic as possible, demonstrating how materials fall and fit on various body types.

Previously, you had to provide a full-body photo or use a pre-set model that looked similar to you, but those alternatives are still available for people who want them. Using a selfie solves a frequent problem: many people have a lot of good headshots but few full-body images. That said, it still works best with a clear, well-lit picture, but you can still get a good idea of how it’ll look with a not so ideal shot.

Google updated try-on in mid-December 2025, but this tool was actually first released during the summer. The goal remains the same: make shoppers feel more confident about buying garments online and reduce those annoying returns where something just doesn’t fit or look right.
