Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has revealed that Danny Welbeck remains an injury doubt for Brighton’s Premier League match against Sunderland on Saturday.

Welbeck has been hampered by an ongoing back issue in recent weeks and started on the bench for Brighton’s 2-0 defeat away to Liverpool last weekend.

The 35-year-old comes up against his former club this Saturday as Brighton host Sunderland at the Amex Stadium.

Hurzeler has revealed that Welbeck has been able to train this week, although he has not made a full recovery.

When asked about Welbeck’s injury during his press conference on Friday, Hurzeler said: ‘It’s still restricted.

‘But Danny sometimes does incredible things. Let’s see if he’s an option to start.

‘But the issue has not healed yet and it’s still restricting him during the training week.’

Asked about the specifics regarding Welbeck’s injury, Hurzeler replied: ‘He has some minor issues with his back.’

Brighton will definitely be without captain Lewis Dunk, who misses the game through suspension.

‘He’s a big, big miss definitely,’ Hurzeler said.

‘But we have a strong squad, we have other players who are able to replace him. Of course Lewis is a big miss, but we also have a big confidence in our players who will replace him.’
