The Holiday period is upon us, a time when many people will be browsing stores and online retailers for gifts to purchase for family and friends. A new study has identified the most frequently recalled product categories in the U.S., with baby and children’s items topping the list.
The study, conducted by accident and injury lawyers Bana Law, analysed recall data to determine which products pose the greatest risks to consumers and gift recipients this Christmas.
The statistics released in the report show that manufacturers recalled 2,642 products in the babies and kids category. This makes children’s products the most recalled items, with nearly 50% more recalls than the second-ranking category, sports and recreation, which witnessed 1,794 product recalls.
Home appliances placed third with 1,202 recall reports. Dorel Home Furnishings Cosco 2-Step Kitchen Steppers were the most recent recalled product from this category due to fall and injury risks.
Toys ranked fourth overall with 1,178 recall reports. The latest recall in this category involved Tegu Magnetic Floating Stackers which violated mandatory standards for toy magnets, posing serious ingestion hazards.
Clothing and accessories secured the fifth position with 875 recall reports. Baby Loren Morning Children’s Loungewear was most recently recalled for violating federal flammability standards for children’s sleepwear.
Products classified as furniture and furnishings ranked sixth with 845 recall reports. Amazon Basics Premium Foam Eurotop Mattresses were recalled on July 31 this year due to fire hazards that violated federal mattress flammability standards.
Nursery equipment and supplies had 652 recall reports. LIVACTI Retractable Safety Gates were recalled for entrapment risks that could cause serious injury or death.
Yard and garden products ranked eighth with 605 recall reports. Winston Products expandable hoses were recalled due to impact hazards and risks of temporarily impaired hearing.
Completing the top ten, electronics came in ninth with 582 recall reports, while kitchen products placed tenth with 576 recall reports.
