On Thursday, November 20th, the Goo Goo Dolls performed at hometown show at Town Ballroom in Buffalo, New York.

The iconic rock group Goo Goo Dolls is comprised of Johnny Rzeznik and Robby Takac.

They kicked off their set with “Long Way Down,” and took them down on a trip down memory lane with “Slide” and Dizzy.”

It was followed by the infectious “Here is Gone,” which is this journalist’s all-time favorite Goo Goo Dolls tune in their musical catalog.

Equally noteworthy was “Black Balloon” and “Nothing Lasts Forever.” The acoustic ballad “Sympathy” was filled with ambivalent, raw emotions, and it certainly struck a chord with the fans due to its intense and scary nature.

They continued with such nostalgic hits as “Name,” “Come to Me,” Big Machine,” and “Better Days,” whose subject matter is as relevant as ever, especially in this digital age that we are living in today.

Equally uplifting and fun was the earworm “Broadway” and it was neat to hear Johnny and Robby Takac since “Two Days in February” (from their “Hold Me Up” album) in a distinct solo, controlled fashion.

After “Not Goodbye,” they closed their set by tipping their hats to the late but great Tom Petty with “You Wreck Me” and their signature ballad “Iris,” which felt like the national anthem of the night (as fans of all age groups was reciting the lyrics verbatim).

This intimate concert benefited FeedMore WNY, where they were able to raise an impressive $150,000 for the nonprofit. The fundraiser placed a spotlight on Western New York’s hunger-relief efforts.

The Verdict

Overall, the Goo Goo Dolls delivered a high-octane and entertaining concert in their hometown in Buffalo, New York. Hearing “Iris” alone was the price of the ticket.

Fans and listeners didn’t only just get a rare up-close experience with the Grammy-nominated rock band — they were able to contribute to a cause that directly supports the community that raised the band.

Most importantly, with this vivacious show, the Goo Goo Dolls proved that they belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their live show in Buffalo garnered two giant thumbs up. Bravo.
